Everyone knows that becoming a parent means that our lifestyle will entirely change, but many mothers and fathers to be don’t realize that they can take steps to prepare for this new life. We’re not talking about stocking up on diapers and taking mat-leave—we’re talking about preparing both mentally and emotionally for a new phase in life.

Preparing for change can also prevent postpartum depression, which has been shown to be caused by a feeling of being overwhelmed by the birth, not having enough help and a sense of isolation. Continue reading

For many parents who are aware of all the chemicals and artificial ingredients lurking in Halloween candy this can be a precarious time of year. Likely you love the harvest time, the beautiful leaves, the pumpkins, the fun decorations and how darn cute your kid looks in their costume – but you are dreading all the junk they will be given. Many of us are also concerned about the type of candy we want to give out to other children in our neighbourhoods.

5 Things You Can Do At Home To Heal Yourself After Birth

I remember how hard it can be to even contemplate leaving the house in the early days of having a newborn baby!

So here are some things you can do to gently heal yourself without going for counselling in the early days following a traumatic or difficult birth experience.

1. Feel: Remember it is OK to feel overwhelmed/sad/disappointed/confused about the birth. Most often our difficulties with feelings are about our battle with them. Try to go with them….if you feel sad, allow the tears without holding back. Trust that they will end eventually….as long as you express them. If you feel angry, find a safe way to express it…hitting a ball with a racket off the side of the house, ripping up pages of a phone book, any other inventive ways you can think of to get your anger out. Parenting for a Peaceful World with Robin Grille

Naturalmommy is pleased to introduce Robin Grille, father, psychologist, author and parenting educator from Australia. We were very excited to get the change to talk to Robin about his world changing endeavours and to share his parenting wisdom with you, especially his concept of emotionally authentic parenting.

Robin has written two thought provoking books, Heart to Heart Parenting and Parenting for a Peaceful World. Both books promote the cultivating of loving and supportive relationships between parent and child while discussing the effects of relationships based on shaming, manipulation and abuse.

Parenting for a Peaceful World was our first introduction to Robin. We were struck by his connection between parenting and the level of peacefulness in society. He believes that our child rearing choices can be the most powerful agents for positive social change and planetary healing.

This work gets parents thinking from a whole new perspective about their role as promoters of peace, yet Robin does this without patronizing the reader. Instead Robin focuses on giving parents general information about research relating to child development. This research touches on areas of development psychology, social psychology, biology and psycho-history. Robin argues that emotionally healthy children are a communal responsibility and we have to agree with him.

In Heart to Heart Parenting Robin focuses on showing parents how to nurture their child’s emotional intelligence and to encourage children to grow up in ways which support peace and sustainability. Continue reading

Six Clean Plates

Last weekend I had all of the cousins over for a camping adventure on the property. They range in age from 7 – 12. Most are very easy going when it comes to food from the garden and are eager to try new dishes. However, 2 of the bunch refused and have always refused to try anything! Breaks my heart. This year it was going to be different.

The deal was you can spend the night, sleep in the tent, sit by the campfire and roast smores only and only after you have worked in the garden and helped to pick the veggies for dinner. This years crop included cauliflower, leeks, onions, fennel, garlic and basil. The kids promptly hopped in the hot tub allowing me to clean the produce. After their showers they strolled into the kitchen one by one and we chopped, very finely all of our ingredients. They watched and participated in the making. The salmon was prepped with fresh garlic, a bit of olive oil, salt & pepper, lemon and popped into the oven. Rice was thrown into the rice cooker and we were on our way.

We talked about the veggies from the garden, how they thought we could prepare them in the future, what they loved about the harvesting process and more. The veggies were sautéed, each child got a stir or two and then we were ready to plate. Something was different this time. They all were excited to know how their little creation was going to turn out. Beautiful plates were plated with a nice amount of rice. On top of the rice we did a large spoonful of the sautéed cauliflower (remember tiny, tiny), fennel, garlic, basil and leeks. Atop that our lovely salmon and garnished with a pinch of fresh basil. What a treat! The kids picked up their forks and in what seemed like an instant the plates were bare – I was astounded. The first thing I did was to call my parents who were in complete shock that the two girls not only ate but tried something new. Then I was on the phone to my brother who did not believe me. Here’s the SECRET: the kid’s had a vested interest. They picked the veggies, they cooked, they talked about the meal and in the end they wanted to know what it tasted like. Of course it was fabulous. Mission accomplished. I think I’m onto something here!

Babies & Kids with Eczema; no fun for anyone!

Have you ever parented an itchy, unhappy child with an angry red rash? Perhaps your child had the rash with little bumps weeping fluid, or maybe she had the dry rash that cracked when she scratched it?  Eczema is an increasingly common health issue among babies and children and can be an endless source of frustration. What is eczema anyway? There are two main types.  Contact Dermatitis is an allergic reaction to laundry soap or another irritant in the environment.  This type of eczema can be usually be “cured” by removing the irritant. The other type of eczema, atopic dermatitis, is an itchy red rash that may be inherited from one or both parents. Allergies and asthma are linked to eczema so you may see any of these conditions occurring in members of the same family. Eczema, asthma and allergies are genetically linked and are all the result of a malfunctioning immune system. For this reason, they are sometimes considered autoimmune conditions. Continue reading

Safely Ever After – A Safety Resource for Parents

Safety is a subject that all parents worry about. It is also a subject where most of us need some guidance or at least a refresher. Having some safety tools in your parenting tool-box can relive some of the tension and offer empowerment. This is why we had to introduce you to the amazing web-site, Safely Ever After by mom & certified prevention educator Pattie Fitzgerald. She offers practical, down-to-earth strategies for keeping our kids safe.

As she says, “there is more to keeping kids safe than just teaching the stranger-danger concept.” She takes a positive, no-fear approach and challenges traditional safety-strategies. One of her tips is to teach kids which strangers are safe: “If you kids get separated from you at the mall, tell her to flag down the first mom with kids she sees.” In other words, other moms are safe strangers. Another thing to tell kids according to Fitzgerald: safe grownups don’t ask kids for help!! (They go to other grownups if they need assistance). Good one!

Fitzgerald’s web-site offers tips and safety rules for kids. She also has a “did you know?” section which is devoted to teaching parents about predators. Importantly, she helps parents know what they should tell their kids and encourages open dialogue between parent and child. She also encourages parents and kids to go with their gut feelings. When you get a bad feeling about someone, trust your instincts! Also, listen to your kids when they get a bad feeling because they might be picking up on something that you’ve missed.
